Individual Lamplighters – An Alternate Plan

Some of you are not able to start a Lamplighter Chapter, do not have one in your area or do not feel comfortable joining one. I understand. We are initiating an alternate Lamplighter program. It is called the Stand Alone and be a part of the Lamplighter Army. If you need support on your journey to heal contact me at Margie@thelamplighters.org. Let me know the town and state (or country) you are from. I will list that town on my website under the Individual Lamplighter Plan on this home page of my website and post a star on the map of that town. That way, if someone in your town needs support they will see that they are not alone. They will email me and with your permission I will give them your email address. That way, while still being anonymous, you can chat on the Internet through emails or chat rooms; you can speak with each other on the phone or you can meet for a cup of coffee. You will have someone to share your story with and would be a part of our Lamplighter Army, our own National Guard. This website is the hub, directing everyone to help. Imagine… a map with so many stars you can hardly see the map!

We now have six Individual Lamplighters in Columbia, MO., Waco, TX., Ballston Lake, NY ,West Fork, AR and in Pinckney, MI., and Mt. Pleasant, MI.  If you live in or near any of these cities and need help please contact Margie@theLamplighters.org.

While I highly recommend it as a successful model to help you through recovery, it is not necessary to own the book REPAIR or be working the program to start a Lamplighter Chapter of your own. This website is primarily to encourage the formation of Lamplighter Chapters.

No qualifications needed other than a sincere desire to be supportive of child sexual abuse victims who are trying to recover and a commitment to follow the code of The Lamplighters.

How to Start a Chapter of Your Own

Whenever one or more is gathered…

  • Locate a safe place to hold your meetings: hospital conference rooms, churches, recovery centers, etc.
  • Decide on the meeting format and the frequency that works best for your group
  • Spread the word in any way you can: Twelve Step meetings, flyers, ask local radio stations and newspapers to advertise
  • Ask counselors in your area to recommend The Lamplighters to their clients
  • Commit yourself to following the Code of The Lamplighters

It’s so easy! Even if it’s just you and a friend sitting in a coffee shop telling your stories and being supportive of each other, that constitutes a Lamplighter Chapter. The facilitator of a meeting is responsible for finding a place to hold the meetings, deciding on the time, frequency of meetings, etc. and then getting the word out.  For more information on how to start a chapter, notify me and I will email you the Lamplighter Facilitator Guide. Once you make a decision to start a chapter, you will also be included in the regular group email that goes to all the facilitators and an announcement will appear on a group email as well as on the website. That way you can email each other with ideas and support. AND your STARBURST will appear on our map for everyone to see!

Lamplighter Chapters have already been started in Cottonwood, Arizona, Redding, Torrance, Burbank, Chino and Fresno, California, Snellville, Georgia, Cedar Lake, Muncie, and surrounding area and Evansville, Indiana, Olathe, Kansas, Murray and Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky, Pittsfield, Maine, Pinckney, Fostoria and Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, International Falls, St. Cloud (2), Monticello, and Ada, Minnesota, Columbia, Missouri, Billings,Montana, , Hopkinton, New Hampshire, Buffalo, New York, Bismark, North Dakota, Canton and Barberton, Ohio, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Elgin, South Carolina, Nashville, Tennessee, Angleton, Austin. Waco and Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Virginia Beach, VA, and OshKosh and Mauston, Wisconsin, South Bend, IN,and Johnson City, TN. We also have a chapter in Tokyo, Japan, a chapter in Hayes, Middlesex,London, England, one in Bournemouth, Dorset, England, a chapter in Castle Douglas, Scotland, a chapter in Kichner, Ontario, Canada, one in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada and a chapter in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, a chapter in Maroochydore, Queensland, Australia, two chapters in Lagos, Nigeria, Africa, a chapter in Mundri, Sudan, Africa and a chapter in Nairobi, Kenya, Africa.

All of the Lamplighter facilitators and potential facilitators are in touch with each other by email to give encouragement, support and ideas. Feeling that a movement of one voice would give more power to these survivors, we hope one day to have Lamplighters all around the world. Are you in a position to start a Chapter or do you know anyone who could? We need an army.

Please let me know if you decide to form one, so that we can maintain a national directory on our web site and pass the torch to new groups. I will be happy to help you start one in any way I can.

You don’t have to be a survivor to start a Lamplighter Chapter although most of our facilitators are. We welcome advocates, therapists and counseling centers!

Email Marjorie McKinnon for further information and for how to contact a Chapter near you at margie@thelamplighters.org

I am an adult female, trying, to survive childhood incest. I thought al-anon would be helpful, but I need something more relative to my situation. I was looking for a group posible in the Lapeer, MIchigan are; I live in fostoria. I could possibly start my own, but have no clue where to begin?
If you could give me any info, it would be appreciated.
    Thank you

    Hi Marindy (lovely name),
Thank you for contacting me. We have two Stand Alones in Michigan. Those are facilitators who not been able to get a chapter off the ground but are available to start a chapter if anyone is interested (all you need is two people, even if you’re having coffee together and sharing your stories. The healing comes in the sharing, especially with someone who has been where you’ve been). Keasha LeClear is in Pinckney, MI and Tracy Howard is in Mt. Pleasant, MI. Let me know if either is close to you and I will email you their email address. If they are too far away and you are interested in starting your own I can walk you through it plus once you make a decision to start your own chapter I add you to our Lamplighter Roster and an updated roster goes to all of our facilitators so you have them to give you support and ideas. I can also email you a copy of the Lamplighter Facilitator Guide that give you more information about starting a chapter. Another recommendation would be for you to get a copy of REPAIR Your Life: A Program for Recovery from Incest & Childhood Sexual Abuse. Amazon.com has them pretty cheap $12 or so and also has several 5 star reviews. Once you start working that program you’ll be on your way. That program took me from being married to my 3rd abuser (I was an incest survivor), suicidal, filled with despair and living part time in a women’s shelter to being the happiest person I know. You are not alone. I will do every thing in my power to help you through this. Let me know what you decide. Take care of yourself.

I would be happy to start a Lamplighter in Iowa. You can give or post my email for anyone in Iowa to contact me via email. I have been in group meetings for 15 years and I am very experienced in this area. I am also the creator of Child Voice on Facebook and anyone can message me through my facebook and become my friend and we can talk through facebook messaging. I would be willing to talk with anyone via email or through child voice…all they have to do is message or email me. Thank you,
    Susan
Child Voice…just request to be my friend and I will be there for anyone.

    Hi Susan,
How exciting! We don’t have any chapters in Iowa. What town in Iowa do you live in? Also, I’ll need your last name. I’m emailing you a copy of the Lamplighter Facilitator Guide so you can see how easy it is to start a chapter. I’ll also put an announcement on Facebook so people can contact you there. Let me know when it’s okay to add you to our Lamplighter Facilitator Roster. It’ll just show your name, location and email address. I’ll add the extra information about how to contact you on Facebook and if you’d like we can list your blog as well. Then I’ll email the updated copy to everyone and you’ll have access to support and ideas from all of our other facilitators. Thank you again for what you are doing.
